How to Give a Role to New Members (Welcome Role)

Automatically assign a role to new Discord server members when they join using the MEE6 Welcome Role feature. Step-by-step setup guide.

With MEE6, you can automatically assign a role to new members when they join your server. This feature is great for giving new members a default role, like "Member," or adding some color to their names to brighten up the server.

How To Set Up a Welcome Role

You will need MEE6 Premium to be able to use the Welcome & Goodbye plugin.
Head to your Server Dashboard → Essentials → Welcome & Goodbye.
Open the plugin page and enable the "Give a role to new users" feature.

Once enabled, you can assign a role that will automatically be granted to all new members joining your server. You can add more than one role if needed.

To ensure MEE6 can assign roles, make sure its role is positioned above the roles you want to assign in your server's role hierarchy. Also, ensure the MEE6 role has the "Manage Roles" permission enabled.

Roles are Given Upon Server Rules Acceptance

This option is automatically enabled if you're running a community Discord server.
It requires new members to accept the server's rules before receiving the role.
This preserves Discord’s anti-raid protections, preventing new members from sending messages until they've accepted the rules (this protection is lifted once a role is assigned).

Troubleshooting: Auto Role Assignment Fails Randomly or Works Inconsistently

If your auto role assignment sometimes works and sometimes doesn't—or appears to fail randomly for certain new members—the most common cause is the server rules setting described above.

When server rules are enabled, roles are only assigned after new members accept the rules. This creates an inconsistent pattern where:

  • Some members get the role immediately (they accepted the rules)

  • Others don't get the role at all (they haven't accepted the rules yet)

  • New member join events don't appear in your arrivals channel until rules are accepted

To check if this is affecting your server, go to Discord Server Settings → People → Access → Server Rules. If you want immediate role assignment for all new members regardless of rules acceptance, consider disabling this setting and displaying server rules in a different way (for example, in a dedicated text channel).
