This article explains how to set up and offer discount coupons to your subscribers through MEE6 Monetize. Coupons are managed through your Stripe account and work for bank card payments only.
⚠️ Coupons are only supported for payments made with a bank card via Stripe. Other payment methods are not eligible.
1. Create a Coupon in your Stripe Dashboard
Coupons are created and managed directly in Stripe — MEE6 does not have its own coupon creation interface.
To get to your Stripe Dashboard:
Visit your server dashboard → Select Monetize → Receive Payments → Open the triple-dot menu → Dashboard.
Once in Stripe, navigate to Product catalog → Coupons to create a new coupon.
❗️ Important: Make sure to enable the Use customer-facing coupon codes toggle and configure the code there — that is the coupon code that you will provide to your subscribers.
You can configure:
Discount type: a percentage off (e.g. 50%) or a fixed amount off.
Duration: applies once, for a set number of months, or forever.
Redemption limits: limit the total number of times the coupon can be used, or set an expiry date.
Additional settings for customer-facing coupon codes: the code itself and how it works for your subscribers.
Tip: For security and to prevent sharing, consider generating unique, randomized single-use customer-facing coupon codes. This ensures each coupon can only be redeemed once.
2. How Subscribers Apply a Coupon at Checkout
When a subscriber goes through the checkout flow, they will see a field to enter a coupon code. After entering a valid code, the discount is applied and the updated price is shown before payment is confirmed.
The coupon code field only appears during checkout and is only available for bank card payments via Stripe.
3. MEE6 Fees and Coupons
MEE6 charges a 5% platform fee on Monetize payments. How this fee is applied depends on the payment type:
Recurring subscriptions: the 5% fee is calculated on the discounted price the subscriber actually pays.
One-time payments: due to a Stripe limitation, the 5% fee is calculated on the original, non-discounted price of the plan — not the amount the subscriber pays after the coupon is applied.
Chargeback fees are set by Stripe and are not affected by coupon discounts.
4. 100% Discount — What's Possible?
The behavior of a 100% discount coupon differs depending on the payment type:
Recurring subscriptions: a 100% discount is fully supported. You can make the first payment free, the first X payments free, or the entire subscription free forever.
One-time payments: a 100% discount is not possible. The checkout window will show the coupon as invalid if the discounted amount does not cover Stripe and MEE6 fees. The subscriber must pay at least enough to cover these fees. For example, on a $3 plan, the maximum discount is approximately 79–80%.
The maximum discount percentage for one-time payments depends on the plan price — the higher the plan price, the higher the discount can be.
5. Can I Restrict a Coupon to a Specific User?
Stripe offers the option to restrict coupon redemption to a specific email address. However, this feature is not guaranteed to work with MEE6 Monetize, as MEE6 creates a new Stripe customer each time a user subscribes — even if the same email address is used.
The recommended approach to give a discount to a specific person is to generate a randomized, single-use coupon and share it directly with that user.
